The Legal Year Opening Ceremony in Goroka, Eastern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

As the new legal year dawns upon Papua New Guinea, it brings with it a solemn reminder of the principles that underpin our justice system. Each year, the commencement of the legal calendar is marked by ceremonies held in major centers across the country. These gatherings serve as a symbolic reaffirmation of our commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice for all.

At Waigani, the seat of the Supreme Court, the Legal Year Opening ceremony took place on Monday, February 5th. Just a week later, on Monday, February 12th, the town of Goroka in the Eastern Highlands Province held its own ceremony at the St. Mary's Catholic Church. These events provide an opportunity for members of the legal fraternity to come together, reflect on the past year, and set the tone for the year ahead.

Speaking to a group of legal professionals in Goroka, Chief Justice Honorable Sir Gibbs Salika delivered a powerful message that struck a chord with everyone present. He emphasized the universal truth that every individual, regardless of their status or influence, has a duty to uphold the rule of law. Whether in government leadership or at the community level, from law enforcement to local leaders, each person has a vital role in preserving the integrity of our legal system.

The Chief Justice's message serves as a timely reminder of the profound impact that the rule of law has on every aspect of our society. It is the cornerstone of democracy, ensuring that justice is administered fairly and impartially. It is the bedrock of civil society, providing a framework for resolving disputes and upholding individual rights. And it is the foundation of a just and equitable society, where all are treated with dignity and respect under the law.

As we reflect on the significance of the Legal Year Opening ceremony, let us not forget the words of Chief Justice Salika. Let us reaffirm our commitment to upholding the rule of law in our daily lives, both within the legal profession and beyond. Let us strive to build a society where justice is not just a concept, but a lived reality for all. And let us honor the memory of those who have dedicated their lives to the pursuit of justice, knowing that their legacy lives on in our collective commitment to a better future.

JUSTICE SYSTEM AN EXECUTIVE CLUB FOR FEW - By Allan Bird

JUSTICE SYSTEM AN EXECUTIVE CLUB FOR FEW: GOVERNOR BIRD By Allan Bird MP, Governor for East Sepik Province | The SUN of Papua New Guinea. It seems the rich and the powerful cannot be touched by our judiciary system. They can hire the best lawyers money can buy while police prosecuters are living in the settlements. Even when the Police Prosecuters are good at their job, well the workers in the courts help the rich and the powerful to get away with by robbing the future of our children. It seems that there is no place in PNG for good, decent and honest people. Only the rich and powerful, and evil people can get ahead in PNG. This is not a good sign.   I urge all good PNGeans to rise up, take back our country from the evil that has taken hold of our nation. As evil continues to win, good people will continue to lose hope. This is happening already.   Let's beat evil together. Don't let them win. If we all give up and give in, if evil people continue to win and there is no...
